Each year, the Pro-Mozart Society of Atlanta sponsors a competition to select an outstanding musician to receive a scholarship to attend the Summer Academy of the Mozarteum Institute in Salzburg, Austria. The award is made to the person winning a competition held in Atlanta, Georgia during the winter months.

The last winner received an award of $5000. Details concerning the amount of this year’s award, the qualifications, documents to be submitted, and dates are shown below and are also available in a printed announcement.

Qualifications and Requirements for the Scholarship

Applicants should:

  • Be at least 18 years of age by January 1 of the year of the competition finals.
  • Be a resident of Georgia or a student currently attending a Georgia college or university.
  • Complete an application and submit it with the following information:
    • A typed resume, including: current address, permanent address, telephone numbers, e-mail address.
  • Submit a short essay regarding career intentions and reasons for wanting to study at the Mozarteum.
  • Furnish a 20-minute CD showcasing your musical ability:
    • First selection on the CD must be a work by Mozart; remainder of selections should include contrasting works.
    • If you are a vocalist, selections should include 3 languages.
    • Label the CD with your name. Also, include a sheet listing the selections on the CD in order with approximate minutes.
    • Have two different people listen to your CD to confirm that it works (in the past, some have been received which would not play—if this happens, you will be disqualified).
  • Furnish two letters of recommendation from teachers or professional musicians.
  • Submit newspaper critiques or reviews, if available.
  • Include a glossy 8×10 or 5×7 photograph.
  • Commit to a recital for Pro-Mozart during the concert season following study at the Mozarteum, if chosen the winner of the competition.
  • Submit an application fee of $40.00, check or money order, payable to “Pro-Mozart Society of Atlanta GA Inc.” Application fee must accompany the application or the application will be rejected.

Competition Procedure

  1. The applicant submits a completed application by the due date.
  2. A panel of judges evaluates the CD and documents and selects a slate of finalists.
  3. The finalists determine and submit to the VP of Scholarship the musical program they will perform.
  4. The finalists perform in a competition in Atlanta that is open to the public.
  5. During the reception that follows the competition, the judges make a decision and the name of the winner is announced.
  6. Competition finalists receive written feedback from the judges on their performance.

Important Dates

Applications must be postmarked or submitted by courier no later than the date to be determined. This information should be sent to Jenny Ham, VP Scholarship.

The judges will evaluate recordings submitted by applicants, select finalists, and communicate decisions by a date to be determined.

The finalist competition will be held at a location and date/time to be determined.
